About Medina and
the School District

Where We Are

The picturesque historic Medina Public Square with its quaint gazebo is perhaps best known as the site of summer Friday night band concerts. The square is often used for school activities, such as the Garfield Elementary School Halloween parade, the Medina High School Homecoming parade and the middle schools' spring string orchestra concert. Yet its old-fashioned quaintness belies the modern education that is offered in Medina City Schools.

The Medina City School District encompasses much of the City of Medina, Medina Township, Montville Township and small portions of Granger, Lafayette and Sharon townships.

Medina is a residential community of above average income. It is located 25 miles south of Cleveland and 15 miles west of Akron and is situated near Interstate Highways I-71, I-77 and I-76.  (See map)

The core "downtown" and a bustling shopping area in the northern section of the city are surrounded by a rolling rural setting and mushrooming housing developments.

Our District

The school district is experiencing enrollment growth as more and more parents and businesses are attracted to the area by its benefits. Within the last few years, an addition was added to a new elementary school was built as well as a major renovation and addition to the high school.

About two-thirds of the district's students are transported by school bus to one of the nine existing buildings. Addresses and administrators are listed at the end of this section.

  • High School: Medina High School is a comprehensive 4-year high school, accredited by the North Central Association. Students attend 7 class periods of 50 minutes per day. The school offers 200 courses in college preparatory and technical arts. Athletes compete in the Pioneer Conference.
  • Middle Schools: The two middle schools are designed on the "school-within-a-school" concept with teams of about 125 students being grouped with teams of about five teachers.
  • Elementary Schools: The district's five elementary schools each have their own personalities but all teach the same curriculum and have the same programs and resources available to them.
  • Kindergarten Center: The Kindergarten Center serves the elementary students from H.G. Blake Elementary school and houses Helping Hands Preschool.  Morning and afternoon sessions are offered.

Curriculum

Medina City Schools emphasizes a strong, integrated curriculum founded in the basics. Its gifted education program and its special education programs attract visiting teachers from throughout the state. Staff training and the use of technology are among the district priorities. The school district offers a wide range of classroom enrichment and co-curricular opportunities so that every student can develop his or her talents and be successful in school. The high school music and journalism programs regularly win national awards. Academic and co-curricular participants annually reach the state level and beyond.

Community Involvement

Community involvement is encouraged in all of the schools, and has produced a five-year Strategic Plan with specific goals in the areas of at-risk students, student goal-setting, technology, communications and curriculum. Parent involvement is evident in the number of parent support groups and large attendance at open houses and parent-teacher conferences. The Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the school district for a number of business-school partnerships.

Communication

The district communicates through dialogue forums, a monthly newspaper tab, a Web site and a cable television station with daily bulletins and broadcasts of school events.

Local newspapers also carry news about our schools. They are the Plain Dealer, Akron Beacon Journal, Gazette and The Sun.
