Dollars For Scholars
HOW IT BEGAN . . .
"Dollars For Scholars" is a grassroots,
self-help movement in which citizens raise money within their communities to
help local students obtain vocational and college training.
It grew out of the idea of one man in Fall River, Massachusetts with
encouragement of many individuals and of Time, Reader's Digest, and The Saturday
Evening Review, to a national organization founded in 1961 and incorporated
under the name: Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America, Inc.
Medina started a local chapter, the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Medina in
March, 1966.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT . . .
> Dollars For Scholars seeks to get a
contribution from local citizens. It also seeks leadership gifts from
individuals, organizations, and business establishments.
> A committee awards scholarship funds to local students on merit with the
amount determined by need.
> While most scholarship programs seek only top scholars, this program seeks out
the average student who has strong motivation.
> Dollars For Scholars aid is not limited to those going to four-year colleges,
but also encourages training in business schools, technical institutes, junior
colleges, and vocational institutions.
> Dollars For Scholars reaches all income students but favors those with need
who also excel in service.
