Seniors:

            Here is the fifth of many monthly publications which will provide you with valuable
scholarship information.  Consult the websites listed or see Mrs. Hershey in House 1 for information. 
Many sponsors request you apply on-line.  If available, paper applications will be distributed from
House 1 Office.  The due date listed is the date the application must be in the hands of the sponsor,
so please do not delay in completing applications.

“Dollars for Scholars” Community Volunteer Service Award

v    Postmark deadline:  March 16, 2009

v     Open to high school seniors who have strong academic records and considerable volunteer community service experience

v     To be considered for local Dollars for Scholars provide a copy of your application (both sides!) to Mrs. Hershey by March 16.

 

United Way of Medina County 2009 Youth Service Recognition

v     For high school students who demonstrate outstanding voluntary service to the community

v     To honor 10 outstanding juniors and seniors from each Medina County high school

v     Application is available to download at www.unitedwaymedina.org

v     Deadline is Monday March 6, 2009.  Application is due to the MHS Hub by February 27, 2009

 

The William D. Squires Educational Foundation

 

v     Primarily need-based

 

v     Applicants must have an EFC less than $10,000

 

v     Award amount is $3,000 per calendar year and renewable up to $12,000

 

v     Min. of a 3.2 GPA

 

v     Postmark deadline: April 5, 2009

Legislative Scholarship Program (This is for Technical/Business Schools; NOT 4-year colleges/universities!)

          -      120 scholarships available and range from $2,000 to $15,000

            -      Available to Ohio high school graduates of the academic year of 2009

            -      Deadline for application is March 30, 2009

JACL/CJAF Scholarship

-         Cleveland Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), Cleveland Japanese American Foundation (CJAF)

-         Must be a JACL member or a dependent of a member or an American citizen of Japanese descent. 

-         Two scholarships in the amount of $1000.00 each

-         Application form may be obtained from the following:  www.lkwdpl.org/jacl 

-         Deadline for application:  May 29, 2009

National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences - Lower Great Lakes Chapter

Ø      Two (2) $2000 scholarships

Ø      High school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college and intend to pursue a career in television or television-related fields

Ø      Deadline March 29, 2009

Jane E. Hunter Scholarship

v     Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

v     Established to help young women from Ohio continue their education

Medina County Union King’s Daughters & Sons Scholarship

-         $1,000 scholarship

Student Lending Works

-         Four (4) $1,500.00 scholarships to graduating high school seniors

Medina County Bar Association

-         One $1000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will be awarded based on essays submitted by applicants on the theme “There Ought to be a Law”

-         Applications and essays must be received on or before April 14, 2009

Junior Women’s Civic Club

-         $2,500 scholarship

-         Based on following:  Financial need, female student, must not be a member of JWCC

-         Deadline is April 9, 2009

DeVry University

-         Columbus Campus of DeVry offers over 7,500 scholarships

-         Dean Scholarships – valued up to $13,500 or $1,500 per semester to students who have a qualifying ACT or SAT score. ACT/SAT score is a 24 composite on the ACT or an 1100 combined math and reading scores on the SAT

-         Community Scholar Awards – Valued up to $9,000 or $1,000 per semester.   Eligible students must be nominated by their principal or designee and must be ranked in the top 50% of the class or have a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale

-         Cisco Networking Academy Scholarships – valued up to $10,800 or $1,200 per semester.  Applicants must have successfully completed the IT Essentials 1 or CCNA Semester 1.

2008 Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program

             -    Granting $1,000 to $10,000 to entrepreneurial and community minded teen girls

-         Nominees must submit a personal statement of no more than 250 words and a 750 word letter of endorsement from an adult – parent, teacher, mentor

Women’s Network Scholarship Committee

-         A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a young woman graduating from a public or private high school in the

      greater Akron area.  This scholarship is designated for a student accepted into a baccalaureate degree program

      in the physical sciences, engineering or mathematics at an accredited university.  The $1,000 scholarship is

      renewable annually for a maximum of four years ($4,000)

-         The scholarship honors Akron native Judith Resnik, one of seven astronauts who perished in the Challenger

Space Shuttle disaster in 1986

Tzu Chi Scholarship

-         Selected on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and college plan

-         Each scholar will be awarded a total of $1,000

-         Deadline is March 1, 2009

 

Junior Women’s Civic Club

-         Individual scholarship in the amount of $2250.00

-         Requirements:     

1.      Financial need

2.      Female student

3.      Minimum of a 2.5 GPA

4.      Volunteer service

5.      Female student must be a high school senior or an undergraduate college student who will attend an Ohio college or university in the Fall of 2009

6.      Must not be a member of JWCC

7.      Must not be a child or grandchild of a JWCC member

8.      Deadline is April 9, 2009

Cleveland Chapter of the Japanese American Citizen’s League (JACL)

Cleveland Japanese American Foundation (CJAF)

-         Must be a JACL member or a dependent of a member: or an American citizen of Japanese descent

-         The applicant need not possess a Japanese surname

-         The scholarships carry a monetary value of up to $1,000.00 each

-         Deadline is May 31, 2009

Notre Dame College

The 2009 Alexander Hamilton Citizenship Achievement Award

Ø      Only high school juniors are eligible for this award

Ø      Deadline for submission is April 17, 2009

Ø      Top winners receive a $500 cash scholarship and are automatically enrolled in the Hamilton Leaders Academy

Medina County Farm Bureau Scholarship

v     One (1) $1,500 and one (1) $1,000 scholarship for student continuing his/her education in an agricultural field of study

v     One (1) $1,000 and one (1) $500 scholarship available to qualified applicants for any major field of study

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship

v     Open to 9th -12th graders

v     Entry deadline is March 15, 2009

v     Ten (10) national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on their behalf.  More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education.  More than 2,000 winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl’s gift card.

The Carlton Schooley “Balanced Man” Scholarship – Bowling Green State University

v     One $500 scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding male attending Bowling Green State University in the fall of 2009

v     Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
