Seniors:

            Here is the second of many monthly publications which will provide you with valuable scholarship information.  Consult the websites listed or see Mrs. Hershey in House 1 for information.  Many sponsors request you apply on-line.  If available, paper applications will be distributed from House 1 Office.  The due date listed is the date the application must be in the hands of the sponsor, so please do not delay in completing applications.   If you have questions, see Mrs. Hershey. Remember, most scholarship money comes directly from the colleges and universities, so be sure you apply there first!  Good luck with your scholarship searching!

OAPSE Northeast Scholarship

-         Available to children whose parent or legal guardian is a member of good standing of the Ohio Association of  Public School Employees, OAPSE/AFSCME, Local 4, AFL/CIO.

-         Four scholarships of $1,500 each are awarded to the recipients selected from the applicants who meet the eligibility requirements

-         Application must be postmarked no later than February 9, 2009

Medina County Show Biz Company Scholarship

-         Two $500 scholarships to two deserving students of any Medina County High School

-         Must be active members in the performing arts at his/her school

-         Deadline March 15, 2009

The Graphic Arts Council – Benny Awards Competition

-         Open to any high school student involved in commercial art, graphic design, computer graphics, printing,  journalism or communications programs in the Northeast Ohio area

-         Deadline for entries is December 4, 2008

Canisius College Music Scholarships

-         $2,000 scholarships are available to incoming freshmen and renewable for four years.

-         Must attend Canisius College as a full-time student

-         High school music performance experience (solo or ensemble)

-         Application and application tape (5 minutes total); two contrasting styles of music

-         Solo audition by invitation pending review of application

-         Maintain a GPA of 2.5

-         Deadline January 15, 2009

The American Legion’s National High Oratorical Contest

-         Scholarship awards are presented to the three finalists in the Final Round as follows:

o       1st place - $18,000   2nd place - $16,000   3rd place - $14,000

-         Each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the Final Round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship.

Burger King Scholars Program

-         Scholarships of $1,000 each

-         Merit based and need based 

-         Applications available online.  Deadline is Feb. 2, 2009.

MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund

-         Applicants must be dependent children, stepchildren or legally adopted children of Army soldiers on duty, retired or deceased while on active duty or after retirement.           

-         Unmarried for the entire academic year

-         Under the age of 22 on May 1, 2009

University of Cincinnati Scholarship

-         This scholarship covers tuition and fees and provides a stipend. To be considered, students must: 

o       1.  Apply for admission to UC.  Students are urged to complete their UC admission application before January 15, 2009 so they can also be invited to the Cincinnatus Scholarship competition

o       2.  Complete the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program application by February 1, 2009. (Available in Word or PDF format at www.uc.edu/turnerscholars

-         Eligibility requirements:

o       Be American Indian, Alaska Native, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Hispanic as defined by the University of Cincinnati Office of Equal Opportunity

o       Permanent resident of Ohio

o       Be a graduating high school senior

o       Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0

o       Rank in the top 1/3 of their class or have a minimum “B” average

o       Have a minimum ACT score of 23 and/or a minimum SAT score of 1070

o       Be accepted in a four-year matriculating degree program at UC

Ohio Newspapers Foundation – The Seventeenth Annual Minority Scholarship Program

-         Three $1500 scholarships available this year.  These scholarships are intended for Ohio high school seniors   planning to major in print journalism at an Ohio college or university during the 2009-2010 academic year

-         Students can download applications by visiting the website at www.ohionews.org

-         The deadline for applications is March 31, 2009

Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition

-         College scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 each.

-         Deadline for submissions is February 1, 2009

Cuyahoga Community College Foundation Scholarships

-         Offers a variety of scholarship opportunities

-         Can apply at the Tri-C website at www.tri-c.edu/scholarships

-         FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov

-         Some scholarships may require a special application in addition to the Tri-C Foundation Scholarship Application.  These are noted in the criteria in the Scholarship Guide at www.tri-c.edu/scholarships

Phi Delta Kappa North Coast of Ohio Prospective Educator Scholarship

-         Two $500.00 scholarships

-         Deadline:  February 1, 2009

-         Completed application and 500 word essay

CollegeAdvantage Scholarship

Stark State Academic Scholarship

-         Restricted to high school seniors planning to enroll as full-time students at Stark State College

-         Deadline February 28, 2009

-         Amount of scholarship may vary, but intended to defray the entire cost of all instructional and general fees for the freshmen year

The American Musical and Dramatic Academy Scholarships

-         AMDA is committed to assisting promising young artists through the support of our National Scholarship   Program

-         Last year, over $1,500,000 was awarded to scholarship recipients

-         Deadline is February 1, 2009

2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship

-     The 2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship will be available on-line from

       November 1, 2008 through January 12, 2009

-     Non-renewable $1,000 award for the student’s first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited

       college or university

Big 33

-         StudentsNovember 3, 2008 through February 6, 2009:  High school senior students in Pennsylvania and Ohio can apply for scholarships by accessing the Big 33 website www.big33.org.  All Big 33 scholarship applications are available on-line for each student to complete and submit for processing.

United Way of Medina County 2008 Youth Service Recognition Application

            - Honoring 10 outstanding juniors and seniors from each Medina County high school

            - Of those students, several seniors are selected to receive a scholarship for his/her continuing post-secondary

               education at a college, university or trade school

-         Deadline is Monday, March 3, 2009

McKelvey Foundation

-         Awards $10,000 scholarships per academic year for 4 years (total of $40,000)

-         60 scholarships to be awarded in 2009

-         Must own and operate a business for at least 1 year and have at least one paid employee

Johnson & Wales University

-         Valued from $7,500 to full tuition for high academic achievers

-         Recipients are chosen from students who are accepted in the university’s honors program

-         One $3,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who answers the scholarship question online (in 150 words

S-STEM Scholarship for Engineering Technology

The Graphic Arts Council of Cleveland Award

-         Students must be nominated by their respective art teacher

The Ohio State University Alumni Scholars Program

-         Due February 13, 2009

-         Submit the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or renewal FAFSA by your priority deadline to the federal processor at the address listed on the FAFSA

o       Parents of dependent students must also sign the FAFSA

Medina County Board of MRDD Scholarship

-         Awards up to three (3) $500.00 scholarships each year

-         Applicants must be a current high school senior and have been accepted into an accredited training program in a field providing services to individuals with MRDD

-         Interested students must complete and submit a Marion Stroud Memorial Scholarship application form before Monday, March 31, 2009 to be considered

KNOWTRI-C

-         Academic Excellence Scholarship – Your high school counselor can nominate up to three candidates to receive the $1500 annual scholarship for up to two years

Summit Chapter of the Ohio Credit Union League (OCUL) Scholarship

-         Will be awarding 3 scholarships, one will be in the amount of $1,500 and two will be in the amount of $1000 each.

-         All area high school instructors, principals, and guidance counselors are asked to make their seniors who will be considering post-secondary endeavors aware of this opportunity.
