What is the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT)?
  • A series of 5 tests that students must pass in order to earn an Ohio high school diploma
  • Implemented beginning with the class of 2007
  • Measure content learned through the end of 10th grade in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies.

What is the OGT?
  • There are five tests:
    • Writing
    • Reading
    • Mathematics
    • Science
    • Social Studies
  •  Each test consists of:
    • Multiple Choice items
    • Short Answer items (2 points each)
    • Extended Response items (4 points each)
    • Note:  The Writing test has 2 Writing Prompts each worth 18 points.

What is the purpose of the OGT?
  • Make sure that Ohio students who have received a high school diploma possess at least a high school level of achievement.
  • Measure levels of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies skills expected of students by the end of 10th grade.
  • Meet federal law for high school testing.

When will students take the OGT and how many opportunities will they have to pass it?
  • Students take for 1st time in spring of sophomore year.
  • Summer between sophomore and junior year (optional—requires enrolling in summer prep course)
  • Fall and spring of junior year
  • Summer between junior and senior year
  • Fall and spring of senior year.

2008-2009 Testing Schedule
  • Grades 11-12—October 27-November 9, 2008, results January 8,2009)
  • Grades 10-12---March 16-23, 2009 (results due May 28,2009)
  • June 15-28, 2009, results due August, 25, 2009

Testing Day:
  • Students take one test per day.
  • Students have up to 2 ½ hours to take each test.
  • Scientific calculator is provided to students for the mathematics and science tests.
  • Mathematics formula sheet is provided for the mathematics test.

Student Performance Levels
  • Each test is scored separately, a total score is NOT given.  A student must pass all five to earn a diploma.  If retake is necessary, only those subjects not passed are retaken.  A performance level is assigned.
  • A score of 400 or higher is considered passing.  These performance levels are passing:
    • Advanced
    • Accelerated
    • Proficient
  • These levels do not meet state standards of passing:
    • Basic
    • Limited

Test Taking Strategies
  •  General Tips
    • Get Plenty of rest.
    • Eat breakfast on the days of testing.
    • Be confident of your ability and give it your best effort.
    • Pay attention in your classes as your teachers will help you to prepare.
    • Visit ODE websites for practice items.

  •  No Question Left Behind
    • Attempt all items
    • Don’t save the constructed responses for last
  •  Practice Time Management
    • Complete easiest items first, make a second pass for the next easiest, make a final pass for the hardest ones, this strategy allows you to spend more time on the harder items.
    • Use any extra time to go back and check your answers, making sure the choice you marked on your answer sheet is the one you wanted.
