INDUSTRIAL ARTS/TECHNOLOGY

The Industrial Arts/Technology courses are designed to give the student basic knowledge and skills for working with tools, materials, and processes that may apply to future life skills. These courses are open to all students and are designed to meet the needs and interests of both male and female students.

INTRODUCTION TO

BROADCAST JOURNALISM (3851) 1 year, 1 period.......................... ½ Language Arts credit

(Interdisciplinary Class) ½ Technology credit

This class combines current practices in broadcast technology with the needed written and spoken communication skills to be successful in a professional broadcast setting. In addition, an hour of volunteer time videotaping is required outside of school hours. This course is designed for sophomores and juniors interested in a professional career in television broadcasting. Students should have a clear understanding that there is a heavy technological component and should feel comfortable in their ability to learn both hardware and software. Because of the independent nature of the class, students should be responsible and self-directed. Students should be aware that they will be on-air, they will write, and they will use technology. While an application will not be needed, permission will be required by the parents/guardians. Students are responsible for providing their own Mini DV video tape at an approximate cost of $18.00.

Prerequisite: Permission of parents; Grade of “C” or better in freshman language arts

Offered to 10th & 11th graders only. (Does not replace required courses, Sophomore

Language Arts or Junior Language Arts.)

ADVANCED TV/

VIDEO PRODUCTIONS (3820)........................ 1 year...................................................... 1 credit

This year-long course has been designed for students with an interest in television broadcasting and electronic news gathering. The students involved in this class will be responsible for writing, directing, and producing a daily news show presented to the students of Medina High School and the surrounding community. Students will be responsible for a variety of responsibilities including: on-air talent, production, directing, audio engineering, graphics composing, camera operating, script writing, and general research. ($15.00 lab fee)

Prerequisite: TV/Video Production or 100 hours participation in Video Club and voucher from the instructor; Course Fee: $15.00

DRAFTING,

ENGINEERING I (3821)..................................... 1 year...................................................... 1 credit

A basic drafting course covering the fundamental elements of industrial drawing. Topics covered include lettering, geometric construction, single-view drawings, multi-view drawings, sketching, working drawings, pictorial drawings, sectioning, auxiliary views, and simple house plans. Accuracy and neatness are stressed. This course is a must for prospective engineering students, both male and female. Students are required to provide their own drafting tools, or may purchase a drafting kit for $20.30.

DRAFTING, ENGINEERING II

WITH AUTOCAD (3822).................................... 1 year...................................................... 1 credit

A technical course for the prospective draftsman or engineer, using traditional drafting methods along with computer aided design. Topics include threads and fasteners, surface treatment of metals, properties of metals, and manufacturing processes. Drafting tools required.

ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING

& DESIGN (3825)............................................... 1 year...................................................... 1 credit

This course provides an introduction to the field of architecture. Areas of study will include a history of architectural styles, residential design and construction, electrical and mechanical systems, and site development. Students will be trained in both traditional and computer-aided drafting techniques with the skills necessary to complete required drawings. Drafting tools required.

CONSTRUCTION & PRODUCTION
TECHNOLOGY (0825)............................. 1 semester.................................................... ½ credit

An overview of site building construction practices and manufacturing-based production. Students will learn about basic home construction and develop general home improvement skills. Production technology will be explored through a student-developed production product. (Note: Students have the option of purchasing the class’s mass production project at a cost of $5 to $20.)

DIGITAL GRAPHIC

COMMUNICATION (0827)....................... 1 semester.................................................... ½ credit

An introduction to graphic communication based on digital imaging. Students will explore page layout and imaging software. Activities will include digital manipulation of photos, T-shirt and brochure design.

INTRODUCTION TO

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY (0830)...... 1 semester.................................................... ½ credit

Students will learn to utilize basic hand tools and machines to build an understanding of technological systems and processes. Hands-on projects will develop safe practices with shop equipment and provide a foundation for exploring career opportunities in a technological field.

WEB PAGE PRODUCTION (0833)......... 1 semester.................................................... ½ credit

A course that will involve all aspects of web page design. Students will also be interacting directly with individual departments at Medina High School to promote, maintain, and update those web sites.

Prerequisite: Sophomore or above; application B

POWER TECHNOLOGY (0831).............. 1 semester.................................................... ½ credit

This course will introduce the basic concepts in Energy, Power, and Transportation. Hands-on activities will focus on small engines, model-rocket construction, and electronic circuits. Students will also design and construct a mousetrap-powered vehicle.

Prerequisite: None. Course Fee $15.00. In addition students will be required to

purchase a model rocket and engines at an approximate cost of $10.00.
