          Course #1 Senior Writing Seminar -The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a review of the skills and techniques required for the type of writing commonly used in college and the work place. It promotes refinement of composition skills, grammar and usage, vocabulary and speech skills. Formal research is required.

           

                Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Freshman and Sophomore Language Arts and Senior status.

          Course #2 Honors Freshman Language Arts
          This is a challenging course for the student who is willing to complete more course work at a more complex level. As a result, honors courses earn a weighted grade. As a prerequisite, admittance to this course also will require summer reading and writing projects due in August. This course will present word study and reading strategies including source evaluation. It will also explore authors’ techniques during literary studies, which will include several novels, plays, and short stories. Selections will include Romeo & Juliet,   Great Expectations, Cold Sassy Tree, Night, as well as student chosen novels and non-fiction.  Also, students will examine and use various writing processes to create up to ten structured documents including: a narrative essay, an informational essay, a persuasive essay, and a comparison/contrast essay. Other writing experiences will include literary responses, business letters, and research. The course will explore writing conventions including spelling, grammar, and usage. Students will deliver four speeches or oral presentations including an informational and a persuasive speech. The course includes poetry study and writing and a unit on advertising techniques.
