Standard Deviants: Introduction to Shakespeare

 

Pay attention to the movie and jot down notes about what you learn.  This material will be required in the end-of-the unit test and 2nd semester exam.

 

Introduction

Use of the language

7.      What is Blank Verse? Unrhymed Iambic Pentameter

8.      Why did Shakespeare write in Blank Verse? Because he did; it closely resembled the natural speech patterns

Elizabethan Drama

9.      Describe the “importance of words”

Set the stage in place of props and special effects; spectators have to use imagination

10.  What is “Real life vs. Stage life”?

Movies suggest life is real in movies.  In theater, the characters are just characters … we shouldn’t think about the characters outside of the role.  Believe the play write and keep mind set on the play.

11.  How do we analyze characters?

What they say, what they do, and what others say about them

12.  Symbolic Art

  • Universal/ Particular (example): evil in the world/ villain; holiness/ saint with halo; internal conflict within the character/ raging storm in environment
