FLA (indicators for the unit): Apply reading comprehension strategies, including making predictions, comparing and contrasting, recalling and summarizing, and making inferences and drawing conclusions; Answer literal, inferential, evaluative, and synthesizing questions to demonstrate comprehension; Monitor own comprehension; Identify and explain the author’s use of direct and indirect characterization, and ways in which characters reveal traits about themselves;  Analyze the influence of setting in relation to other literary elements; Interpret universal themes; Explain how authors use symbols to create broader meanings;  Explain how foreshadowing and flashback are used to shape plot in a literary text.

Mrs. Oehler will provide accommodations according to necessary IEP or 504 documentation. 

Students will be observed for comprehension and participation.  Occasional reading quizzes and activities will be collected throughout the unit.  There will be a comprehensive reading test at the end of the unit

SLA – (indicators for the unit) Interpret universal themes across different works by the same author or by different authors; analyze how an author’s choice of genre affects the expression of a theme or topic; analyze the author’s use of point of view, mood and tone; explain how authors use symbols to create broader meanings; describe the effect of using sound devices in literary texts; 

Review poetry learned last year.  Small groups will select poems from the freshman text and interpret literary terms.
